If your Morphy Richards toaster isn’t turning on, don’t worry — this is often caused by simple setup, power, or usage issues that can be quickly resolved.
Follow the steps below to identify and fix the issue.
1. Check the Power Supply
Start with the basics:
- Ensure the toaster is plugged in securely
- Check that the wall socket is switched on and working
- Try another appliance in the same socket to confirm it is supplying power
Important: We do not recommend using extension leads with toasters.
For best performance and safety, always plug the toaster directly into a wall socket.
2. Check the Lever Position
The toaster will only operate when the lever is fully engaged:
- Press the lever all the way down firmly
- Ensure it locks into position and stays down
3. Check the Browning Control Setting
Incorrect settings can prevent the toaster from starting:
- Make sure the browning control dial is not set to “0” or the lowest/off position
- Select a mid-range setting (e.g. 2–4) and try again
Some models require a minimum setting for operation.
4. Remove Crumbs and Obstructions
Crumbs or debris can interfere with the internal mechanism:
- Unplug the toaster and allow it to cool
- Remove and empty the crumb tray
- Gently shake or brush out any loose debris
Build-up inside the toaster can prevent proper engagement of the lever or internal contacts.
5. Check for Safety or Power Interruptions
In some cases, the toaster may not operate due to:
- Overheating protection activating after repeated use
- Temporary electrical interruption in the socket
- Internal safety cut-out engaging
Unplug the toaster, leave it to cool for 10–15 minutes, then try again.
6. When to Stop Using the Toaster
Stop using the appliance immediately if:
- It still does not power on after all checks
- There are any signs of burning smell, sparking, or unusual noise
- The toaster repeatedly fails to engage the lever properly
